Every cellar has a story. Most start the same way — dark, damp, forgotten spaces used for dumping old paint tins and broken furniture. But the best cellar stories are the ones where that neglected space becomes something genuinely transformative for a household.

Here are five cellar conversion projects we have completed across Greater Manchester, each with its own challenges and each delivering a result that exceeded expectations.

1. The Flooding Cellar in Didsbury — Home Cinema

This large Victorian semi in Didsbury had a cellar that flooded regularly. Every heavy rainfall brought water in through the original stone walls, leaving them stained, the air musty, and the floor perpetually wet in one corner.

We installed a full Type C cavity drain membrane system across all walls and the floor, directing water ingress to a sump chamber fitted with a dual-pump system. The existing concrete floor was replaced with a new insulated slab over a waterproof membrane, and mechanical ventilation was installed to manage humidity.

The homeowner now has a dedicated home cinema with tiered seating, a 120-inch projection screen, surround sound, and mood lighting. The project was completed to full building regulations standards, and the waterproofing carries a 30-year guarantee. The estate agent’s valuation increased by significantly more than the project cost.

2. The Low-Headroom Cellar in Chorlton — Home Gym

This Edwardian terrace in Chorlton had a cellar with a ceiling height of just 1.8 metres — too low to meet building regulations and uncomfortable for anyone of average height. The homeowner wanted a gym but had been told by another company that the cellar was unusable.

We carried out a floor-lowering exercise, carefully underpinning the existing foundations and excavating to gain an additional 350mm of headroom. The new floor was laid with a waterproof membrane, insulation, and a power-floated concrete finish. A cavity drain membrane was fitted to the walls, and a robust ventilation system installed.

The finished gym has a clear ceiling height of 2.15 metres and houses a squat rack, free weights, a rowing machine, and a wall-mounted TV. Rubber matting provides cushioning and noise reduction. The additional habitable floor area added measurable value to the property.

3. The Victorian Cellar in Sale — Children’s Playroom

A young family in Sale had outgrown their three-bedroom Victorian semi. The ground floor was overwhelmed with toys, and the cellar was original — stone walls, a beaten earth floor in places, and persistent dampness.

We installed a new concrete floor, applied a full Type C waterproofing system, and fitted insulation to meet current thermal standards. The existing stone staircase was replaced with a new timber staircase with proper handrails for child safety, and underfloor heating was installed to eliminate radiators and maximise floor space.

The family now has a bright, warm playroom of approximately 25 square metres. Wipe-clean paint, durable luxury vinyl tile flooring, and built-in storage keep the space practical. The conversion effectively added an extra reception room — a significant boost on the Sale property market.

4. The Damp Cellar in Stockport — Home Office

This 1930s semi in Stockport had a partially below-ground cellar with rising damp and lateral penetration, visible salt deposits, and a strong musty smell. The homeowner, a freelance graphic designer, needed a quiet, dedicated workspace.

We applied a cavity drain membrane system to walls and floor, with water directed to a sump pump. The existing small window was replaced with a larger, double-glazed unit to maximise natural light. A full electrical package included dedicated circuits for computing equipment, recessed downlights, and adjustable task lighting, alongside mechanical ventilation with heat recovery.

The cellar is now a professional home office and design studio with an L-shaped desk, plan chest, and client meeting area. The homeowner reports it is quieter and more productive than any co-working space — and the dedicated office added genuine appeal for future buyers.

5. The Period Cellar in Altrincham — Guest Suite

This substantial Victorian property in Altrincham had a large, multi-room cellar used for storage for decades. The homeowners wanted a self-contained guest suite for visiting family. The space suffered from damp throughout, uneven floors, and no services beyond a single light fitting.

We installed a Type C membrane system across all rooms with a central sump chamber. The floor was levelled and relaid with insulation and underfloor heating. We created a bedroom, an en-suite shower room, and a small sitting area, with new plumbing, a full electrical installation, and particular attention to en-suite ventilation. All work met building regulations, including fire safety requirements for a below-ground sleeping room.

The guest suite is finished to a hotel-like standard — a comfortable double bedroom, fully tiled en-suite, and a reading corner. Guests frequently say it feels like staying in a boutique hotel. A self-contained guest suite in a sought-after area like Altrincham added substantial value to the property.

What Every Project Had in Common

Despite different locations and end uses, all five projects shared non-negotiable elements:

  • Professional waterproofing — every cellar used a Type C cavity drain membrane system, the most reliable solution for below-ground spaces in the North West
  • Building regulations compliance — every conversion was signed off by the local authority
  • Proper ventilation — mechanical ventilation managed humidity and maintained air quality throughout
  • Quality insulation — walls, floors, and ceilings met current thermal performance requirements
  • A thorough initial survey — every project began with a detailed damp survey before any work commenced
